A spray dryer is one of the types of continuous atmospheric dryer, which can complete drying and granulation simultaneously. According to its technological requirements, the pressure, flow and the size of the nozzle of the feed pump can be regulated to obtain the required spherical particles according to a certain size proportion. It uses a special equipment to spray liquid material into a mist, which is dried by contacting with hot air.

What areTypes of a Spray Dryer?

In terms of methods of liquid spraying, there are mainly three types of spray dryers, including centrifugal-type spray dryers, nozzle-type spray dryers, and pneumatic-type spray dryers.

What is a Spray Dryer Used for?

A spray dryer is specially designed for laboratory research used in colleges and universities, scientific research institutes, pharmaceutical, food, chemical and other scientific research departments. The drying process is simple and convenient with a low noise, fast drying speed and lower temperature for heating liquid. It is especially suitable for drying heat-sensitive materials, which can maintain original color and fragrance and features great dispersion, fluidity and solubility.

  1. Chemical engineering: organic catalyst, resin, synthetic washing powder, grease, ammonium sulfide, dyes, dye intermediates, graphite, etc.
  2. Food industry: amino acids and analogues, flavoring, protein, starch, dairy products, coffee extract, fish meal, meat essence, etc.
  3. Pharmaceutical industry: Chinese patent medicine, pesticide, antibiotics, medicine granules, etc.
  4. Ceramics: magnesium oxide, porcelain clay, various metal oxides, dolomite, etc.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Spray Dryer

  1. The production process is simplified and the operation process is convenient. Spray drying can directly dry liquid materials into solid products, which simplifies a series operations, such as evaporation, crystallization, separation, drying and grinding required by the traditional process. Besides, it is convenient to regulate the particle size, bulk density and moisture content of products by changing operating conditions.
  2. It can dry rapidly. The drying time is generally from 5 to 30 seconds with a  large surface area of gas-solid contact. It is especially suitable for drying heat sensitive materials.
  3. The dry products feature good dispersity, fluidity and solubility.
  4. It can protect our environment from contamination due to spray drying is carried out in an airtight container.
  5. Spray drying can be operated continuously, meeting the requirements of industrial mass production.
  1. Complex equipment, large investment and high energy consumption.
  2. It belongs to convection-type dryers, with a low thermal efficiency.

The disadvantages can be ignored compared to its advantages.
